The research approach of Westenberg Research can be characterised by the motto’s ‘What you see is not always what you get' or 'Trust but verify’ and, scientifically formulated, 'Test and falsify.
"As a researcher you believe what the interviewee or respondent says ('trust'), but it is important to explore what someone exactly means. By discovering the conceptual framework from which a person speaks, the real meaning of his or her words become clear (‘verify’). Relevant concepts are often not directly visible at first sight, they lie below the surface. That is why we work thouroughly in our investigations, i.e. critical at our own ideas (‘falsify’) and with focus on the content." (Mirjam Westenberg)
Independence is a precondition for Westenberg Research for good research, necessary to unhibitedly look at things and to go beyond the beaten track.
"Our role as a researcher is to provide insight, to discover and expose things. Too often we can see in the media that there is talk about things for the simple reason that they are easy to measure. Issues that are difficult to measure are rarely discussed, whereas they may be of much more importance. This quite apart from the fact that figures are frequently presented in a tendentious way. We ensure that relevant issues get the opportunity to come to surface." (Mirjam Westenberg)
Development is another core value of Westenberg Research: gaining knowledge, unraveling the clew, making the central thread visible. Overall, the development of knowledge.
"Research is not merely about ‘objective’ statistics, it is about the meaning these figures carry: how they should be validly arrived at and validly interpreted. In addition, it is essential for a researcher to be aware of the angle from which a research question is formulated and to reflect upon that. As a lecturer in research methods, statistics and philosophy of science, I encourage my students to observe deeply, think clearly and apply self-reflection." (Mirjam Westenberg)
